Karni Mata Temple | Bikaner

The Karni Mata Temple, located in Deshnok, about 30 kilometers from Bikaner, Rajasthan, is one of the most unique and revered temples in India. Dedicated to Karni Mata, a 14th-century mystic and an incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple is famously known as the “Temple of Rats” due to the thousands of sacred rats, called kabas, that inhabit its premises.

Historical Significance

Karni Mata, born in 1387, was a spiritual leader and a matriarchal figure for the Charan community. She is credited with many miracles and was deeply respected by rulers and commoners alike. According to legend, Karni Mata requested Yama, the god of death, to reincarnate her devotees as rats rather than letting their souls endure death. This belief forms the foundation of the temple’s unique sanctity.

The temple was initially built in the early 15th century by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner and has since become a symbol of devotion and architectural excellence.

Architectural Marvel

The temple’s stunning facade, crafted from white marble, features intricate carvings and a grand silver door adorned with depictions of the goddess. Inside, the sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of Karni Mata, flanked by silver gates. The temple’s design showcases Rajputana grandeur blended with Mughal influences.

The Sacred Rats

The temple is home to over 25,000 black rats, which are considered sacred and are believed to be reincarnations of Karni Mata’s devotees. Spotting a rare white rat among them is considered highly auspicious. The rats roam freely, and visitors often feed them milk and sweets, a gesture of devotion.

Despite the large population of rats, the temple remains remarkably clean, an aspect that adds to its mystique.

Festivals and Pilgrimage

The temple is particularly lively during the biannual Navratri festivals, when thousands of devotees gather to seek Karni Mata’s blessings. The vibrant atmosphere, accompanied by devotional songs and rituals, makes it a spiritually uplifting experience.

A Unique Experience

The Karni Mata Temple is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of faith and cultural heritage. Its intriguing legend, architectural beauty, and unique relationship with rats make it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Rajasthan. The temple offers a profound glimpse into the spiritual and mystical traditions of the region.
