Seth Bhandasah Jain Temple | Bikaner

The Bhandasar Jain Temple, also known as Bhandeshwar Jain Temple, is one of the most magnificent and historically significant Jain temples in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Dedicated to Sumatinath, the 5th Tirthankara of Jainism, the temple is renowned for its intricate architecture, vibrant frescoes, and spiritual sanctity.

Historical Significance

The temple was built in the 15th century by a wealthy Jain merchant, Bhandasa Oswal, after whom it is named. According to local legends, the construction involved using 40,000 kilograms of ghee instead of water in the mortar, symbolizing the devotion and opulence of the Jain community. This temple remains an enduring legacy of the Jain faith and its patrons in Bikaner.

Architectural Splendor

The Bhandasar Jain Temple is a three-storied marvel of Rajputana and Jain architectural styles. Constructed from red sandstone and white marble, the temple is adorned with stunning frescoes and elaborate carvings. The inner walls and ceilings feature detailed paintings depicting scenes from Jain mythology, floral motifs, and celestial beings.

The sanctum houses the idol of Lord Sumatinath, beautifully crafted and venerated by Jain devotees. The upper floors of the temple offer breathtaking views of the old city of Bikaner, making it a blend of spiritual and visual delight.

Religious Importance

The temple is a sacred site for the Jain community and attracts devotees seeking blessings and spiritual peace. It embodies Jain principles of non-violence, simplicity, and devotion, serving as a beacon of religious harmony in the region.

Preservation and Cultural Heritage

The Bhandasar Jain Temple is not just a religious monument but also a cultural treasure of Bikaner. Its timeless beauty and historical importance make it a must-visit destination for tourists and historians. Efforts have been made to preserve its intricate artwork and architectural grandeur, ensuring that future generations can appreciate its legacy.

Visiting the Bhandasar Jain Temple offers a unique opportunity to experience the spiritual depth and artistic brilliance of Jain culture, making it a cherished landmark in Bikaner’s rich heritage.
