Devi kund sagar | Bikaner

Devi Kund Sagar, located about 8 kilometers from Bikaner, Rajasthan, is a serene and historically significant site known for its royal cenotaphs (chhatris) and its architectural beauty. This cremation ground served as the final resting place for the members of Bikaner’s royal family, making it an important heritage site.

Historical Significance

Devi Kund Sagar reflects the Rajput tradition of constructing cenotaphs to honor deceased royals. Each chhatri is dedicated to a specific king or queen and is a unique representation of Bikaner’s architectural and cultural heritage. The cenotaphs date back several centuries, with the oldest belonging to Rao Kalyanmal, who ruled Bikaner in the 16th century.

Architectural Marvel

The cenotaphs at Devi Kund Sagar are crafted from white marble and red sandstone, each showcasing exquisite carvings, intricate latticework, and domed structures. The most remarkable of these is the chhatri of Maharaja Surat Singh (ruler from 1828 to 1853), made entirely of white marble and adorned with delicate engravings and intricate floral designs.

The cenotaphs of the queens are equally stunning and are distinguished by their smaller size compared to those of the kings. The symmetry, elegance, and craftsmanship of these structures reflect the architectural brilliance of the Rajputana era.

Spiritual and Cultural Importance

Devi Kund Sagar is not only a historical site but also a spiritual one. The tranquil environment of the kund (water tank) and the surrounding chhatris offer a sense of peace and reverence. Visitors often come here to connect with the rich cultural past of Bikaner and to admire the blend of art, history, and spirituality.

Present-Day Attraction

Devi Kund Sagar is a popular destination for tourists, historians, and photographers. Its serene ambiance, combined with its architectural beauty, makes it an ideal spot for those seeking to delve into Bikaner’s royal legacy. The site is also a testament to the Rajput ethos of honoring ancestors and preserving their memory through enduring monuments.

A visit to Devi Kund Sagar offers an enriching experience, allowing one to appreciate the artistic and cultural richness of Bikaner’s royal history.
